about

Written and (mostly) recorded in the 1980's, NINETEEN EIGHTY SOMETHING, while being Munich Syndrome's 13th album, is technically its first album. Starting around 1982 running up to 1988 or so, some of the songs were missing middle sections, a chorus, or a line or two. The tapes sat on a shelf for over 10 years, before one move, then another, and then another found them sitting in a closet.

While looking for something else completely unrelated, a decision was made to actually listen to the tapes after all these years. Some of the songs were redone at various points in the 2000’s, but none really captured the essence of what was intended in the 80’s. One song completely vanished from memory. The ironically titled “Missing”, came out of the box fully formed. A very curious feeling listening to it after so many years, it was like finding a diary with an entry you had never seen before.

Written at a time of naiveté and (relative) innocence, at a time of self-discovery, the songs run the gamut of infatuation, longing, loneliness, and realization. All of the songs have stayed in my consciousness (minus the previously mentioned Missing) and I always felt they deserved to be dusted off, cleaned up a bit, and given a chance to find a life of their own out in the world.

This was my 80’s, and maybe some of it might resonate as part of your 80’s as well.
